What Semaglutide is

Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide analogue of human GLP-1 that acts as a GLP-1 receptor agonist.

FDA labeling describes it as having 94% sequence homology to human GLP-1, with a C18 fatty diacid attached to the lysine at position 26 via a hydrophilic spacer and further modifications at positions 8 and 34; its molecular weight is 4113.58 g/mol.

The FDA-approved injectable products, marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy, are supplied as ready-to-use solutions in pre-filled pens at concentrations stated on the label, and a tablet form is marketed as Rybelsus.

The same ingredient is also supplied as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder in compounded and research presentations; those are not FDA-approved products, and the concentration of one is set entirely by the mass in the vial and the volume of diluent added to it.
